LeatherQuest is for people who have scene and play experience, can
demonstrate competence at bdsm, and want to engage in a course of study
and growth that prepares them for deeper and more spiritually based
play. It is also for those who wish to find a place of real service to the community at large, as a
leader, as a teacher, and as an example for others to follow.
The primary focus of these classes is not the technical how-to topics usually offered. We focus more on the emotional, ethical, and spiritual aspects of the leather lifestyle, in the context of the traditions we've been given and with respect for our teachers and forebearers. LeatherQuest is not a gateway group like the Society of Janus, and as such it is selective in who will be admitted and who will graduate. Diversity within the class is desired, but the class cannot be more diverse than the people who choose to apply. The upcoming class will start on Saturday February 6, 2010 at 10:00 am and will be a meet and greet of students and instructors. Instruction and our first full weekend will begin Friday March 5th 2010 at 6:00 pm. Most class weekends will be the first weekend of the month. Given the length of the program and the commitment required, the attrition rate for a class often runs 25-50%, so keep in mind that even if you apply and are accepted it's not taken for granted by anyone that all cadets will graduate; some will quit, some will be asked to leave, and some will be asked to stay on for part of the next group. Application Requirements The application process includes the following:
1.
At least one reference from a graduate or national-level instructor
familiar with the Academy, or two references from officers in local leather organizations. These should come from the persons themselves, stating how they know the applicant, their
impressions of the applicant as a person and as a member of the bdsm
community, and why they believe that the applicant would benefit from
LeatherQuest
2. A head shot digital photo
3. A personal letter of introduction describing your experience and history in leather.
4. An essay describing the journey that the applicant is on and how LeatherQuest might support that journey.
5. A personal interview by VG Smith or his designated representative.
6. Participation in a scene observed by VG Smith or his designated representative. This
can simply be observation on a given night at the SF Citadel or something
similar. This is not meant to make the scene a performance or a place
to feel judged, but to confirm that the applicant has the necessary
skill base.
The Letter of IntroductionPlease answer the following questions:
What is your name, age, gender and orientation, and preferred role (Top, bottom, switch, dom/me, submissive, Mistress/Master, slave, and so on)? What bdsm experience(s) do you have, privately and/or in the context of a community?
What has been your best bdsm experience to date? What has been your worst bdsm experience to date? What do you want from your bdsm experiences? Do your bdsm and your spirituality connect in some way? If so, how? If not, how do you feel about the concept? The EssayWhy do you want to join the LeatherQuest?
What do you think you will get from your LeatherQuest experience? What do you want from Life, and how do you think LeatherQuest can help? Are you willing to consider yourself in service to the LeatherQuest experience for the duration of the Quest weekends, and what limits and limitations do you have regarding that? Please note that the letter of introduction and the essay are two separate documents. Also note the essay is to be a personal letter, not a restatement of the questions followed by a short answer for each. Give us a sense of who you are as a person. Both the letter and essay will be shared with instructors and mentors.
